We visited St Jean du Gard in late April, another beautiful city in the Gard district in southern France. A lovely mountain stream runs right through the valley and the city's centre. An old steam train still takes you through the scenic mountains of the Cevennes. Robert Louis Stevenson once bought a donkey and journeyed through this area in a somewhat naive and romantic manner, much to the amusement of the locals. But their descendants now honour the visit of this distinguished writer in various ways, including having a fountain commemorating his journey. We found the streets of St Jean du Gard interesting and restful, and the economical restaurants well worth leisurely visits.
